The path to ISO 50001 certification follows a clear sequence. Understanding and planning this systematically from the outset helps the organization use time and resources as efficiently as possible.

Step One: Define Scope and Energy Policy

The organization must clearly define the scope of its energy management system and produce an energy policy approved by top management, demonstrating commitment to continual energy performance improvement and to providing the necessary information and resources.

Step Two: Conduct the Energy Review

The energy review is the most time-consuming step in the entire process. The organization must gather at least one year of historical energy use data, analyze all energy sources used, and identify significant energy uses, while assessing variables affecting energy use — such as production volume or weather — to build an accurate energy baseline.

Step Three: Set Objectives and an Action Plan

From the energy review results, the organization sets measurable energy objectives and targets, and produces an action plan specifying improvement measures, responsible parties, timelines, and budget.

Step Four: Implement, Monitor, Then Seek Certification

After implementing the plan and continuously tracking energy performance data for a period, the organization conducts an internal audit and management review, before applying for assessment by an external certification body to obtain formal certification.
