ISO 9001 remains the world's most widely adopted quality management standard. Since the 2015 edition, a great many Thai organizations have built their operating processes on its principles. In September 2026, the International Organization for Standardization officially published a revised edition — a significant shift that every quality manager should understand thoroughly.
The Nature of This Revision
The first point to understand is that this revision is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The High Level Structure under Annex SL remains unchanged, and the ten core clauses retain their structure. What has changed is the wording, clarified and harmonized, along with greater emphasis on contemporary themes that a modern quality management system must address: quality culture, ethical conduct and behaviour, and the integration of digital technology into core processes.
Transition Timeline and Certificate Impact
Organizations already certified to the 2015 edition will have a three-year transition period from the date of publication — meaning 2015-based certificates will cease to be valid no later than September 2029. During this window, certification bodies will progressively align their audit criteria with the new requirements, so organizations do not need to rush the transition, but should plan ahead so that the next surveillance audit aligns with the new direction.
How Organizations Should Prepare
As quality management system consultants, we recommend organizations begin by reviewing their quality policy and objectives to confirm they address the ethical and cultural dimensions now emphasized. Next, conduct a gap analysis between current processes and the revised wording, and plan training for internal auditors so they correctly understand the intent of the new edition — ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruption to operations.
